Building the next generation of change-makers
Why We Run is a powerful school-based program designed to educate and inspire young people to prevent domestic and family violence through empathy, leadership, and social justice.
Whether delivered as a tailored program or a full 8-week experience leading into Darkness to Daylight, Why We Run equips students with real-world understanding - and connects them to the lived stories of DFV survivors.
How it works
Students are paired with the story of a real DFV survivor to run in their honour
Weekly physical training builds toward participation in the Darkness to Daylight event
Students write a letter back to the survivor as part of a personal reflection and commitment to change
Sessions explore respectful relationships, social justice, and how to support peers
Program benefits
Increases awareness of DFV and its root causes
Builds leadership and social responsibility
Creates a culture of empathy and peer support within the school
Helps students identify and respond to unhealthy behaviours
Fosters more respectful, inclusive and safer environments
A proven impact
At St. Teresa’s College, the program has run for over a decade (and has even be made into a documentary!) with many participants stepping into school leadership roles after completing the program.
